Following your recommendation, we performed a test using the V TCPIP,TCPIPROC,SYSPLEX,LEAVEGROUP command before stopping the TCP/IP stack.

The test results were successful, and we observed the following sequence:

After issuing the LEAVEGROUP command, OSPF-related events were triggered while the original TCP/IP stack and OMPROUTE were still active.

On the switch side, we confirmed that the routing information for VIPA 00.00.000.000/00 was updated at 00:00:00.000, with the old next-hop (00.00.000.000) removed and the new next-hop (00.00.000.000) added to the RIB.

We also observed the VIPA takeover messages (EZZ0000I) in the z/OS logs.

This confirms that the LEAVEGROUP approach allows the routing changes to be propagated and reflected on the switch during the takeover process.

However, this raises an important question regarding the normal TCP/IP shutdown behavior.

When we stop TCP/IP directly, the VIPA takeover occurs, but we do not observe the corresponding OSPF routing updates on the switch.

Our expectation is that a normal TCP/IP shutdown should also trigger the necessary routing updates before the stack and OMPROUTE become unavailable, similar to what happens during LEAVEGROUP.

Could you please clarify the following?

Why does LEAVEGROUP allow OSPF routing changes to be propagated successfully, while a normal TCP/IP STOP does not appear to trigger the same behavior?

Shouldn't the normal TCP/IP shutdown process initiate the required routing updates before the VIPA takeover is completed and the original stack becomes unavailable?

Is this difference in behavior expected by design, or could it indicate an issue with the TCP/IP shutdown sequence or OMPROUTE interaction?

Is LEAVEGROUP considered a mandatory step for ensuring proper routing convergence during a planned TCP/IP shutdown, or should a direct TCP/IP STOP handle this automatically?

We understand that LEAVEGROUP provides additional time for OMPROUTE to advertise routing changes. However, we would like to understand why the same routing update mechanism is not triggered during a normal TCP/IP shutdown, even though the VIPA takeover itself is performed successfully.

We would appreciate a technical explanation of this behavioral difference and confirmation of whether this is expected product behavior.
