Loss of Nipple Areolar Sensation
This rare complication tends to be a transient, and some patients may even experience hypersensitivity that resolves eventually. Be sure to counsel the patient preoperatively regarding this potential complication. To prevent loss of nipple sensation, avoid injury to the pectoralis fascia and if possible, leave small amounts of soft tissue over the muscle, design a wider inferior pedicle base, and avoid undermining the superomedial pedicle. Ask patients preoperatively about their nipple sensation, because not infrequently women with macromastia have some reduced sensation at baseline.
