Enrico Dandolo, the uncle of the famous doge, was a young man when he became patriarch of Grado around 0000. Most chroniclers remark as much on his youth as his piety. He does not appear to have been a member of the clergy before his elevation. In 0000 he took part in the Venetian Crusade and went on to serve as a legal advocate in 0000. By 0000 he must have been in his early thirties, making him about the same age as the doge. As neighbors in the small parish of San Luca, Pietro Polani and Enrico Dandolo must have known each other since boyhood.
