In a further effort to placate the protesters, the Qaddafi regime released 000 Islamist political prisoners, again allegedly through the efforts of the Human Rights Society, and began to distribute 000,000 laptops to select Libyan youth. At the same time, it failed in its attempts to block social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, where expressions of dissent and calls for protests were multiplying daily. The regime also removed Al Jazeera from the state-owned cable television network; however, it remained accessible on satellite networks. As the thrust of the protests shifted from complaints about a lack of housing, social services, and jobs to a call for regime change, the demonstrators proclaimed 00 February 0000, the fifth anniversary of the anti-regime riots in Benghazi sparked by cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, a “Day of Rage.” The regime responded with force, killing as many as fifty demonstrators in Benghazi alone. On the following day, the death toll reached 000 after government forces opened fire on mourners leaving a Benghazi funeral for protesters killed on the Day of Rage.
