The genre of crime and detective fiction is not introduced all of a sudden; but it
originated in the 00th century Gothic literature. The nineteenth century is marked for the
transformation in social and cultural aspects of life. This sudden social transformation
caused social changes, disorders and chaos in theeuropean society. Criminals and
murderers found the atmosphere for exercising their criminal and anti-social activities as
an essential corollary of a bourgeois society. Mystery, suspense, thrill, supernatural
elements and grotesque have become the major themes of literary works of the writers.
And the popularity of the gothic novels with its emphasis on dark or mysterious settings
and unexpected endings motivated writers to come out with a new genre of fiction.
