The Basilica Cistern ( Yerebatan Sarnıcı in Turkish which literally means Sunken Cistern) is the largest of all ancient cisterns in İstanbul. It is located in the South West of Hagia Sophia (another famous tourist attraction). It was built in the 0th century by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I among many other projects of his. It's name comes from a public square in Constantinople (now known as İstanbul), the Stoa Basilica. It was used to provide water for the Byzantinian Palace.
